Demand for peaceful and non-discriminatory use of the outer space by the Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

During his official b sit to Vienna, Dr. Gholamhossein Dehghani, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Ms. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the Office for Outer Space Affairs of the United Nations.

"We attach great importance to the work of the UN Office of Outer Space and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, and participate therefore actively in its meetings," said Dr. Dehghani at this meeting. "The development and protection of the international space laws, the peaceful use of the outer space without discrimination, use of small satellites and fair access to Earth's orbit as main topics of this committee, are important to us.

From our point of view, the strengthening and deepening of international cooperation among member states is one of the key objectives of UNOOSA, which can also be considered as an effective factor in the realization of other committee objectives. Along with decisions, the role of UNOOSA in strengthening and expanding spatial cooperation among governments, through scientific and technical exchanges and the transfer of equipment and technology is of great importance. Our call to UNOOSA is to pay a special attention to the needs of emerging states in the field of space, especially with regard to the unilateral and illegal US sanctions.

Dehghani added that "regarding the support of UNOOSA for the successful launch of the first joint workshop on the use of space technology for disaster management in 2015, Iran is ready to host the second round of this joint workshop at the regional level in the first half of 2020 in Tehran.

Ms. Di Pippo also made comments on the amendment of the UN Office on Outer Space agenda and the changes that had been made, saying that the interaction of this office with Iran is very constructive. While mentioning the success of the first joint workshop, she welcomed the idea of the second round in Iran. She also made suggestions in the area of exchanging experiences, training and capacity building.
